Song Annotation

Someday they won't let you, so now you must agree
The times they are a-telling,
and the changing isn't free
You've read it in the tea leaves, and the tracks are on TV
Beware the savage jaw
Of 1984

They'll split your pretty cranium, and fill it full of air
And tell that you're eighty, but brother, you won't care
You'll be shooting up on anything, tomorrow's neverthere
Beware the savage jaw
Of 1984

Come see, come see, remember me?

We played out an all night movie role

You said it would last, but I guess we enrolled

In 1984 (who could ask for more)
1984 (who could ask for mor-or-or-or-ore)
(Mor-or-or-or-ore)

I'm looking for a vehicle, I'm looking for a ride
I'm looking for a party, I'm looking for a side

I'm looking for the treason that I knew in '65

Beware the savage jaw
Of 1984

This song by David Bowie explains the brainwashing of people, but metaphorically. He mentions "I'm looking for a party, I'm looking for a side" much like Winston, he didn't want to side with Big Brother's party. He searched for Goldstein's party and decided to choose that side of the party.
"They'll split your cranium and fill it with air" isn't favorite line. He is expressing how they will fill your head with useless things while brainwashing the things that they do not want you to know.

Pledge of Allegiance

The United States pledge of Allegiance shows how the government is forcing you to believe in something that isn't valuable. They are slowly brainwashing the people to have the same mind set. It talks about our nation as if it were a utopia, when in reality, our nation is nothing like it is described in out pledge. We all subconsciously ode to this pledge. It's strange how we so it without even thinking much of it. Even with gestures, such as placing your left hand over your heart. Of we pay attention, we could notice the slow brainwashing that is taking place.

     I pledge allegiance to Oceania.
To abide by Big Brother and his party.
We stand for 2 minute hates and accept no rebels
We pledge to be watched for our societies own good.
We pledge to our war to get freedom in return.

Oceanias pledge of allegiance contains doublethink phrases to abide by Oceanias strange rules. In it I included Big Brother because I'm reality they are more about big brother than Oceania itself.

Essay

The idea that government is watching our every move is scary for most of us. The government control used by such high levels of technology make us wonder if our technological advancements move us closer to a society like Oceania. At first it’s easy to brush off the fear by saying how telescreens differ so much from surveillance cameras, but there are more similarities than differences. The echnolgy described in 1984 is much more advanced than ours of today. However it’s reasonable to say that this type of technology has not been developd yet, but we’re not too far from it.
In the making of this novel, technology had not advanced to what we know today. We must think rationally and realize that the screens described in 1984 must have been a slow development over a period of time and surpassed a whole process of multiple upgrades. With that being said, it is likely that it all started from the small advancements in technology we have today and progressed into something such as the telescreen. For example, surveillance cameras are said to be used solemnly to monitor crime. They implement the thought that this is to help society in making it a safer place. However the only difference it has according to a telescreen is that it is not a two way television screen that allows communication. The screens never had a camera installed in them as we do today; all communication was held through the screen itself. It is why I believe that our technological advances have reached a scary level of surveillance.
If Big Brother were to ever become a problem in our society, I would cause a massive rebellion. Not only one voice could stop him. Therefor I would make masses of people rebel with me. I'd encourage them not to be afraid, because once we work together there's not much a group of people could do, over masses of people.

Telescreen : Facebook

Facebook gives any one easy access to your information. Especially because we past everything we do, see, and even think. Everyone can see what you post, therefore you are constantly being watched, much like a tele screen.

Surveillance cameras watch everything we do and even keep a recording of it. It is without a doubt the most similar thing to a telescreen. Though it  can be avoided, there is usually a multitude of them placed at every angle.

Undercover cops are just like O’Brien. They work in secret to catch you in an act much like O’Brien. They seem to be more manipulative, than actually helping around.

Wikipedia : Ministry of Truth

Wikipedia resembles the ministry of truth because of its false information. The way Winston is made o alter the news, anyone can alter the things that are read in a Wikipedia article. Most people are aware of this, yet still decide to resort to the website.

Texting : Newspeak

Texting is most similar to newspeak. We abbreviate every word, and even alter the meaning of other words. However, this isn’t a good thing. Most people become ignorant to modern English language and begin to use texting abbreviation even in person.

After being severely tortured by O’Brien, Winson is relased on what seems sort o like a probation. He has a week to spend on his own, and is to return back to O’Brien when his time is up. Given specific instruction, and such a strict time frame Winston fears what is in store for him once he returns back to O’Brien. During this week he decided to find Julia. Day by day he looks for her at places where they used to meet, or places that they use to pass by on the daily. After no luck for four consecutive days, he nearly comes close to giving up. After a long day of searching and not finding he buys some of the cheapest coffee and sits around thinking and contemplating his next move. Since being released he feels so indifferent about everything and is so uncomfortable being out in the open again. It was like he had almost forgotten what it was like. He slowly begins to have recollection of before, and begins to evaluate in the best estimate, how long he was actually held hostage. He following day he begins his search as usual and to his surprise, he finds her. He spots her from a distance, while she is drinking victory coffee alone. He stares at her for a moment trying to muster up the courage to speak with her. He struggles to gain that confidence because he can’t decipher the emotions her face is portraying, because she isn’t portraying any. After staring at her for a while, he decides to walk up to her. As he is on his way, he seeks a well built handsome man take a seat directly in front of Julia. She grins happily as she appears to gaze at him romantically. Winston stops there and contemplates even taking a step closer to her. He’s aware that he only has two days left until he is to return to O’Brien. Despite the man sitting here, he decided to approach Julia. She notices him but lacks enthusiasm. On the contrary, she seems to look at him in disgust. Of course Winston has lost a dramatic amount of weight, as the whitening of his hair has progressed. Regardless he proceeds to stretch out his arm in hopes for a formal greeting with Julia. She looks down at his hand, and almost forcefully shakes it. Winston can feel the negative vibes she sets off with simply looking at him. Quickly after shaking his hand, she wipes her hand on her jeans, and turns her body to face the man in front of her. Without any further hesitation, Winston begins to walk away. The neglect that Winston received was unconceivable to him. However more than making him sad, it infuriated him. Winston had two days remaining before he returned to room 101, but the amount of hate that he had mustered up in those five days, made him extremely careless about everything. Without hesitation or fear, he walked back to room 101. Upon arrival, O’Brien informs him that he has two days left to wander about. Winston tells him that he is well aware, but no longer wishes to remain outside. Winston did have to be asked twice, he lead Winston to room 101 and told him that he had a surprise for him. For some strange reason, Winton didn’t expect anything bad. He whole heartedly believed that O’Brien had a decent surprise for him. It was until he heard the squeaking of rats that he thought otherwise. Winston’s body shut off in an immense fear. Winston tried so hard to lack any emotion portraying through his face, but he was too frightened. O’Brien seemed to feed off of his fear. O’Brien asked Winston for the last time if he loved and respected Big Brother. Winston, in dramatic fear of the rats blurted out his new found love for Big Brother. However, O’Brien knew that Winston only told him what he wanted to hear due to the rats. Winston’s lies infuriated him, and so he caged three savage rats in a cage that barely fitted Winston’s head. He scram four minutes, Winston’s face couldn’t be recognizable. After 15 minutes, it seemed as though Winston were already dead, however he still had a pulse. He had gone into complete shock while the rats still viciously ate at his face. It took all of Winston’s will power, but he mumbled the word “Brotherhood” before one of the rats ferociously bit his eye socket. Winston died slowly and painful, while O’Brien watch in sick fulfillment.

Summary:

Winston is of low rank in a place called Oceania. Everywhere he goes, even at home, he is being watched through telesceens of the party. The party tries to strongly implement new things to leave no memory of the past. As the story progresses Winston begins to feel extremely frustrated by the oppression and insane control of the party. In due time, he becomes infatuated with what he thinks about O’Brien’s membracy of the brotherhood. (A mysterious group who works in secret to overthrow the party). He works in the Ministry of Truth and that is where he notices a beautiful young girl. At first, he believes that she is simply a thought police who is observing his hate for the party. Eventually, through awkward and skilled planning, he gets to know this young lady, named Julia. In secret, he begins to meet up with her, by manipulating telescreens and such. Eventually they rent out a room above a store where Winston purchased a diary, in which he writes his crimes. Winston strongly believes that they will be caught eventually, but Julia remains obliviously optimistic about it all. As their relationship progresses, his hatred for the party grows. He finally receives news that O’Brien wants to meet him. He tells Winston and Julia, that very much like him, he hates the party. In reality, O’Brien is a party spy who simply pretended to be a member of the brotherhood, only to trap Winston in committing an open act of rebellion. He spends months torturing Winston and brainwashing him too. He takes him to room 101 where O’Brien finally gets Winston to give up Julia. He is eventually released to the outside world.
